On Nov. 15 in Istanbul, PODEM organized a stakeholders’ meeting titled “Driving Social and Economic Development in the MENA Region: The Role of International Organizations”. The meeting was held within the MENARA Project, in which PODEM is one of the consortium members, and discussed the role and impact of international organizations in fostering growth and development of MENA, while looking at the key political, social and economic challenges the region embraces.
The meeting attracted participation from international organizations from MENA countries as well as Europe along with civil society experts, relevant academics and state officials. The participants discussed the main political and socio-economic challenges in the MENA region during the first panel, identifying the key shortcomings experienced by the international organizations on their development agenda. The second panel was devoted to the presentations by the representatives of international organizations such as UN institutions, who talked about development initiatives targeting the region.
During the meeting, the participants stressed the need for political solutions to the regional problems, which would then open more space to the international organizations to address the social and economic needs. The discussions additionally highlighted that the current geopolitical situation of the MENA region is a significant factor on why there is no consensus on defining frameworks such as what good governance is or where partial reforms are led by individuals.
